In 1992, at the Faculty of Materials Technology and Textile Design of the Lodz University of Technology, a new study programme was created – Architecture of Textiles.
- On January 1, 1997, the Department of Textile Architecture was established.
- On January 1, 2003, the Department of Textile Architecture merged with the Department of Textile Technology and Construction.
- On October 1, 2005, the Department of Textile Architecture merged with the Department of Chemical Fibre Treatment.
- On October 1, 2005, the Institute of Architecture of Textiles was established with three departments: Department of Architecture of Textiles, Department of Chemical Processing of Textiles, Department of Technology and Textile Construction.
- On October 1, 2010, at the Institute of Textile Architecture there was established the fourth Department: of Visual Arts.
Currently, the following Teams operate within the Institute:

- Textile Technology and Construction Team
- Clothing and Textronics Team
- Visual Communication Team
