The concept of "architecture of textiles" was introduced by prof. Janusz Szosland, who drew attention to the combination of specific "architectural" details of textiles: design and construction elements forming one coherent artistic and functional entity. As Prof. Józef Masajtis wrote: “architecture of textile created this way, through its proximity, has a huge impact on man, organising one’s closest surroundings, as if it was the “natural environment”.

The idea of "architecture of textiles" is also valid in the present time of the Institute – as a concept describing the harmonious coexistence of engineering ideas with artistic and design solutions. It manifests itself both in the research work and in the didactic work of the staff consisting of engineers, artists and designers. Architecture of textiles (textile design) as a field of study and research has been supplemented with fashion design, as well as visual communication and printing techniques.
