About Me:
Assoc. Prof. Zbigniew Stempień is a university professor at the Institute of Textile Architecture at Lodz University of Technology. His research focuses on advanced technical textiles, textronics, and digital printing technologies. His work is centered on developing innovative solutions in protective textiles, particularly ballistic shields, and on the applications of electroconductive layers printed on textile substrates. Assoc. Prof. Zbigniew Stempień is a co-creator of the term "textronics," which describes the interdisciplinary field combining textiles, electronics, and computer science.
Education:
2010: Habilitation in Textile Engineering, Lodz University of Technology
Dissertation Topic: The Influence of Fabric Structure on Its Ballistic Properties.
2000: PhD in Textile Engineering, Lodz University of Technology
Dissertation Topic: Destruction and Degradation of Viscoelastic Textile Products Under Longitudinal Tension Wave.
1992: Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Automation, Lodz University of Technology
Professional Career:
Assoc. Prof. Zbigniew Stempień began his scientific career at Lodz University of Technology in 1993 as a technical engineer. In 2000, he became an assistant professor in the Department of Textile Process Automation, where he conducted research on dynamic fiber loads and technical textiles. Since 2012, he has served as an associate professor, and since 2018, he has been a university professor at the Institute of Textile Architecture. During his career, he has also held the positions of Head of the Department of Clothing Technology and Textronics and Director of the Institute of Textile Architecture.
Visiting Professorships:
Assoc. Prof. Zbigniew Stempień has been invited as a visiting professor to prestigious universities worldwide, including the Technical University of Istanbul (Turkey), L'École Nationale Supérieure d'Ingénieurs Sud Alsace (Mulhouse, France), Ege University (Izmir, Turkey), University of West Attica (Athens, Greece), Universitat Politècnica de València (Valencia, Spain), and 'Gheorghe Asachi' Technical University of Iasi (Iasi, Romania). These international experiences have allowed him to establish global research collaborations and expand the scope of his research and teaching competencies.
Research Areas:
- Textronics: Assoc. Prof. Zbigniew Stempień is a pioneer in textronics, which merges textiles with electronics and computer science. His research includes developing printed electroconductive layers on textiles, including conductive polymers and graphene, as well as sensory and actuator elements such as gas sensors, temperature sensors, and textile antennas.
- Digital and 3D Printing: Assoc. Prof. Zbigniew Stempień research includes the development of advanced digital printing techniques, including 3D printing on textiles. He has developed innovative methods for applying functional prints used in creating protective textiles and advanced composite materials.
- Ballistic Shields: In the area of protective textiles, Assoc. Prof. Zbigniew Stempień conducts research on the ballistic effectiveness of fabrics made from high-strength fibers such as para-aramids and polyethylenes. His work involves analyzing fabric structures and optimizing their protective properties.
